Steve Pierce was awarded a silver medal at the American Homebrewers Association National Homebrew Competition held June 19-21 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Pierce's award-winning brew was his Schwarzbier (Black Beer) in the Dark Lager Category.

This is an extraordinary honor for Pierce and the brewing community in Alaska, as the AHA National Homebrew Competition is the largest of its kind in the world, with 1,300 homebrewers entering more than 5,600 beers in 28 style categories for the 2008 competition. Pierce's Schwarzbier beat out more than 150 other beers entered in the Dark Lager category.

Pierce wasn't the only Alaskan to bring home a medal. Jason Ditsworth of Anchorage also won a silver and a bronze medal for two of his homebrewed meads.
