Alaskan Brewing nonprofit seeks coastal cleanup crew

JUNEAU - Coastal CODE, a nonprofit founded by Alaskan Brewing Co. in 2007, is looking for four adventurous recruits for a weeklong, coastal conservation-themed expedition to Yakutat.

The nonprofit will choose the four people based on ideas submitted for maintaining a healthier Pacific Ocean and coastline. The expedition will include sustainable fishing, surfing and beach cleanup in Southeast Alaska. The expedition will wrap up in Juneau with a fundraising concert and cleanup activities Sept. 19.

"The same waves that attract surfers and others to Southeast Alaska carry with them a large amount of marine debris," explains Alaskan Brewing Co. co-founder Marcy Larson. "We have more than 40,000 miles of coastline in Alaska. That is a lot of coastline to cleanup but it offers a lot for us to learn. We are looking for a hardworking crew that can help us achieve both."

Submit ideas at www.coastalcode.org, through Twitter at http://twitter.com/coastalcode, on Coastal CODE's Facebook wall, or in person at related events. Finalists will be asked to submit formal applications. Submissions are due July 1, and the expedition begins Sept. 14.

Alaskan Brewing donates 1 percent of proceeds from its Alaskan IPA to the Coastal CODE initiative.

Alaska Airlines and Wend Magazine are also sponsors of the expedition.
