DOT installs new traffic signal on Egan Drive

JUNEAU - The state Department of Transportation turned on a new traffic signal with a flashing yellow arrow Wednesday at the intersection of Whittier Street and Egan Drive. It's the first traffic signal of its type in Alaska.

A flashing yellow arrow requires motorists to first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding cautiously to turn left.

"The Whittier and Egan intersection was unsafe for pedestrians and motorists in its current configuration," said DOT&PF Commissioner Leo von Scheben. "The new arrow signal intersection will be safer and reduce traffic delays."

The department's Web site provides additional information and an animation about the signal at www.dot.state.ak.us/stwddes/dcstraffic/fya/index.shtml.
