Alaskan at nationals: Carl Blackhurst (2), far left, who grew up in Haines, runs in the middle of the pack during a preliminary heat of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the U.S. track and championships on Thursday in Stanford, Calif. Blackhurst, competing as an unattached runner, finished fifth in the heat and qualified for Saturday's final, where he finished 13th with a time of 8 minutes, 41.74 seconds. Steve Slattery of Team Nike won in 8:23.58. Blackhurst is a graduate assistant coach for track and cross-country running at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. Steeplechase runners must clear hurdles and water obstacles as they cover the course.
