Juneau team wins state tennis title
State champions to compete in regional tournament in Portland, Ore.
The team defeated three straight squads to capture the title.
"It was just amazing," team member Mona Yarnall said. "Just the camaraderie and the fellowship, the gals had a great time preparing for Anchorage and just moving to play together."
The eight woman team played in a team-tennis format, in where there are two singles matches and three doubles matches taking place at once. Whoever wins the most matches wins that particular game.
Juneau opened up competition by beating Team Ruskin, 3-2, and defeating Team Billon, 4-1.

In the championship round, Juneau edged Team Ruskin again by one match.
Yarnall defeated her opponent in three sets - 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 - to give her team the championship.
"We certainly were going in with a very positive attitude," said Yarnall, who has been playing tennis for three and a half years. "We didn't know what we were going to see in terms of competition, but we thought we were competitive last year and we thought we could be as competitive this year."
Allison Erickson went a perfect 4-0 in singles competition for Juneau while Pam Couzin went 4-0 with her doubles partners - Yarnall and Diane Antaya.
Beatrice Franklin, Sarajean Fujioka, Sue Kraft and Vickie Lynn Wilcox all helped the squad by battling it out in doubles matches.
The team will travel to Portland, Ore., for the USTA Sectional Tournament on Aug. 12-14. While the team may or may not bring home another championship, they do figure to enjoy the experience and play great tennis like they did in Anchorage.
"Everyone got along great," Yarnall said. "We were commenting on how everyone got along, no in-house fighting. It was pleasant."
