Ferry Columbia back in action following engine malfunction

JUNEAU - The state ferry Columbia, flagship of the Alaska Marine Highway fleet, is now on its way from Ketchikan to Bellingham, Wash., following delays caused by an engine malfunction.

The 35-year-old ferry is several hours behind schedule, said Cap. John Falvey, the system's general manager. It expects to make up the time and return to the Columbia's regular schedule by next Tuesday when it departs Sitka for Petersburg at 4:45 p.m.

The engine crew detected a malfunctioning vibration dampener assembly prior to sailing from Ketchikan, but was able to disassemble, refit the loose bolts, and reassemble within several hours.

The Columbia is carrying 304 passengers and 120 vehicles.
