Moderate earthquake felt in Juneau
JUNEAU - An earthquake was felt Sunday afternoon in the city of Juneau.
The 5.0 magnitude quake occurred at 3:24 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. It was centered 88 miles northwest of Juneau, in the northwest arm of Glacier Bay.
No damage or injuries were reported in Juneau.
"It was just real quick, over in a second," said National Weather Service forecaster Michael Mitchell, who was working in the Juneau weather office on Basin Road Sunday afternoon. He said the office received reports the quake was felt from Auke Bay to downtown.
No tsunamis were expected.
Alaska is the most seismically active state in the nation.
"We get quite a few earthquakes but most of the time we don't feel them because they're so weak," Mitchell said. In 18 years living in Juneau, Mitchell said he's felt about five earthquakes.
By 6 p.m. Sunday, 118 people had reported feeling the earthquake on the USGS website at www.earthquake.usgs.gov. Reports said the quake's effects felt "weak" around the Juneau borough and "light" around Haines and Gustavus.
