Seven Early Scholars graduate

Eighty people gathered at Mike's Place on May 15 to celebrate the achievements of seven Early Scholars students, all of whom are graduating JDHS seniors. The seven students are: Ben Mallot, Christina Wigg, Curtis Lane, Erika Miller, Michael Petershoare, Kyle Barril, and Maddie Levy.

The Early Scholars Program (ESP) is committed to helping Juneau-Douglas High School, college bound, Alaska Native/Native American students, broaden their academic goals by participating in activities that foster academic excellence and a positive cultural identity. JDHS teacher Paula Dybdahl and JDHS counselor Frank Coenraad work with the students.

These seven ESP seniors have enthusiastically embraced the mission of the program. They have high grade point averages, they have excelled in extracurricular activities such as basketball, music, art and drama, and they have volunteered in civic activities, serving at special functions in the Native community, Youth Court and church programs. They have worked hard during their high school careers and will be continuing their education at the following schools: Gonzaga, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Western Culinary Institute, Grays Harbor College, Hollins University, the University of Evansville and the University of Alaska Southeast.

This year, ESP students have participated in a leadership retreat at SAGA, attended classes at UAS, learned public speaking skills at a Toastmasters workshop, hosted a dessert buffet for college recruiters, tutored middle schoolers, served at the annual Native Community Christmas Party, toured colleges in Spokane and Seattle and actively recruited middle school students. Once a month, students met in small groups to focus on fun team-building activities.

The Early Scholars Program would like to thank the following Juneau businesses for their generous support in celebrating the achievements of our seven graduating seniors: Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Tribes of Alaska, Goldbelt Inc., Office Plus, Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 2, Michael Beasley, Hangar on the Wharf, Gottschalks , ACS, Scentiments, Fred Meyer, Super Bear, Western Auto, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Gourmet Alaska, Costco, Plum Tree, The Gumdrop House, Hearthside, Susan's Hallmark, GoldPanner's Company, and Kmart.

Students and parents would also like to give a big thank you to the following individuals and businesses for helping us with our annual fundraising raffle to send 15 ESP students on a college tour during the spring break: Lyle's/The Big Picture Gallery, Alaska Electric Light & Power, Alaska Litho, Stacy Goade, Sam Wanamaker and Sealaska Corp.
