The Lynx used their bigger, more physical players to hand the Crimson Bears their one and only loss this season.

"I don't think anything went wrong. It was just a good game, a well-played game between two evenly matched teams," Juneau-Douglas co-coach Colin Barton said. "It's just one of those things."

After a scoreless first half, both teams increased the offense in the final 40 minutes of play.

Juneau nearly scored in the 46th minute when Talisa Rhea caught Dimond goalkeeper Larissa Hennessy out of position in front of the Dimond goal but the shot went wide left.

In the 54th minute, JDHS fans gasped when a shot from the left side went off JDHS goalkeeper Kayla Walton's fingertips and off the crossbar.

JDHS cleared the ball, which ignited a counterattack.

Sarah Christianson fed Margaret Sekona in the middle. The sophomore beat two Dimond defenders and ripped a shot that was stopped by Hennessy.

The Lynx finally broke through Juneau-Douglas' defense in the 69th minute. The Lynx' Kelsey Horden sent a free kick in front of Juneau's goal where Carolyn Savage redirected the ball past Walton for the game's first tally.

Kelsey Froehlich added an insurance goal in the 80th minute by heading in Horden's corner kick.

The pace in the first half was slow, which benefited the larger Lynx. Defense dominated the first half, with Dimond taking three shots to Juneau's one.

Dimond had an opportunity to score in the 36th minute, but Walton alertly denied a header.

Juneau also had a chance to score in the half's final minute as Talisa Rhea nearly scored off a set piece, but Hennessy denied her with a diving stop.

Dimond took three shots to Juneau's one in the scoreless first half.

JDHS finished the season with an outstanding 15-1-2 record.

"I think we definitely played really strong," Walton said.

Dimond had plenty of momentum coming into the game, having beaten previously undefeated South Anchorage 7-2 their semifinal contest Friday.

"I think that game helped us a lot," Savage said.

Friday's JDHS semifinal

Juneau-Douglas 6, Chugiak 2

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears advanced to the state championship Friday in dominant fashion with a 6-2 win over the Chugiak Mustangs at Anchorage Football Stadium.

Juneau-Douglas striker Margaret Sekona posted a hat trick in the rout.

"We were more aggressive than we were yesterday," Juneau co-coach Colin Barton said, referring to Thursday's 2-1 win over West Valley. "We tore their defense to shreds."

The Crimson Bears had a near-constant offensive attack on the Mustangs after the fifth minute, when Chugiak scored the game's first goal on a Sarah Watzke header.

Sekona's first goal came in the 11th minute when she took a pass from Sarah Christianson and dribbled around diving Chugiak goalkeeper Mariah Hebbe towards a wide open net.

Christianson added a goal and two assists in the win.

Sekona's second goal arrived via a nicely played corner kick from Jordan Cottingham. Sekona redirected the ball past an off-guard Hebbe.

Sekona's final goal of the match came in the 28th minute after Christianson caught up to a ball near the Chugiak goal and played it across to the wide-open sophomore.

"Our forwards were absolutely lethal," Barton said. "Our strong suit this year has been our defense. This is the first time two goals have been scored on us."

Cottingham scored twice for the Crimson Bears.

Chugiak's other goal came from Alev Kelter in the 64th minute when the game was already well in hand.
