The Crimson Bears (9-0-2) conceded an own goal in the 10th minute, snapping Juneau's scoreless streak at 485 minutes. Despite giving up the goal, the Crimson Bears did just about everything right to beat the Kardinals.

"It was actually a closer game than it sounded like," JDHS co-coach Sandi Wagner said. "The wind was howling and we played on grass, which we don't normally do, and we had a tough time adjusting. Consequently, the ball went back and forth several times."

Playing with the wind in the first half, Kirstin Jorgensen put Juneau-Douglas on the board first. Jorgensen scored off an assist by Rachel Tarver in the fifth minute to put JDHS ahead 1-0.

After the own goal in the 10th minute evened the score, Sarah Christianson capitalized off a rebound in the 15th minute as the Crimson Bears regained the lead.

"Offensively, we were with the wind to begin with and we felt we could capitalize," Wagner said. "But it was 2-1 at the end of the first half."

Playing against the wind in the second half, JDHS altered its tactics.

Instead of playing long, probing balls up the sidelines or down the field, the Crimson Bears played small ball.

By utilizing keeping the ball on the ground, JDHS negated the wind and didn't allow a goal.

"We came back in the second half and played well," Wagner said. "We kept the ball on the ground and controlled play."

Christianson netted her second goal in the 42 minute by scoring off a Gretchen Dierking assist.

Dierking then scored in the 56th minute by converting a cross from Margaret Sekona.

JDHS outshot Kenai 19-4 in the win with Kayla Walton making two saves.

In addition to the win, JDHS got to put some of its injured players on the field. Jessy Post and Rochele Rodman both saw their first action in a while after battling injury.

"We want them to stay healthy so we're going to bring them back gradually."

In the junior varsity game, Lindsey Collins and Amanda Soto scored in the second half to give JDHS a 2-0 win. Lindsey Kato had an assist for JDHS.
