"Our defense was tough," JDHS co-coach Sandi Wagner said. "They've been playing great all year. They kept the zero on the scoreboard."
Juneau-Douglas' defense once again set the tone. The Crimson Bears outshot the Eagles 9-5 in the win.
In addition to strong defense, Juneau-Douglas also received key contributions from a pair of reserves. Wagner said Michaela Goade and Brittany Lehnhart came off the bench to provide some key minutes.
"Goede came off the bench and had an outstanding game controlling the midfield for us," Wagner said. "Brittany Lehnhart also came off the bench and played great defense for us."
Offensively for JDHS, the Crimson Bears converted their corner kicks to knock off West.
Junior striker Sarah Christianson broke a scoreless tie 18 minutes in. when she scored off Rachel Tarver's corner kick. In the second half, Tarver put the Crimson Bears ahead 2-0 by curling in a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Christianson netted her second tally of the game in the 74th minute, when she scored off Margaret Sekona's assist.
"We didn't play a stellar game," Wagner said. "We played well enough to win."
JDHS will take on East at 10 a.m. this morning, then finish its Anchorage visit Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. game against South.
The Juneau-Douglas boys team, on the other hand, dropped its second straight game on Thursday.
The Crimson Bears (7-3-1) fell 2-1 to undefeated West Anchorage. JDHS outshot the Eagles 10-4 in the game and had six corners to West's one. Despite the lopsided stats, West converted its few scoring opportunities, while JDHS managed to score just once.
West took a 1-0 lead just two minutes after the opening whistle. The scored remained 1-0 at halftime.
"They were still reeling a little from last weekend and then to go down 1-0, it was a pretty tough hill to climb," JDHS coach Gary Lehnhart said. "If you look at the game, though, we dominated from there on and we really controlled the ball in their half of the field but didn't convert many opportunities."
West doubled its lead early in the second half with a goal, before Colin Flynn's unassisted tally made the score 2-1 in the 61st minute.
"I was proud of the way they handled it," Lehnhart said of his team. "I didn't have a lot of kids with their heads down."
JDHS takes on East at noon today then South at noon Saturday at Anchorage Football Stadium.
