Darlene Mary (Lindoff) Barril

Longtime Juneau resident Darlene "Jackie" Mary (Lindoff) Barril died April 15, 2008, in Juneau. She was 43.

She was from the Eagle moiety Kaagwaantaan of the Box House. She was T'akdeintaan yádí - Sockeye. Her Tlingit name was Ahl'it Kwei.

Born May 16, 1964, she was raised in Hoonah and attended Hoonah schools until she moved to Juneau, where she lived for 30 years.

She worked as a logger for Southeast Stevedoring and as a fish processor for the Hoonah fish cannery. She worked many years as a proxy worker for Huna Totem Corp. and Sealaska Corp. during elections, as she was a strong believer in supporting and preserving Native corporations for the future generations. Most recently, she worked as an elder caregiver.

According to her family, she loved to go fishing and hunting but attending Gold Medal basketball games was always her favorite. She frequently joked that she wanted to get married at half-time of a Hoonah game during Gold Medal because the whole family would be there.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John and Lillian (Pratt) Marvin; paternal grandparents, Andrew and Mary Jack, and Otto and Mary Lindoff; parents, Edwin and Julia (Marvin) Lindoff; and step-father, Frank Thomas.

She is survived by her children, Johanna Church, Anthony Barril Jr., and Robert Barril; grandchildren, Cristiana Tiedemann and Craig Tiedemann Jr.; sisters, Edwina White and her husband, Paul, of Juneau, Johanna Christiansen, of Norfolk, Va., and Juliann St. Clair and her husband, Earl, of Juneau; brothers, Dennis Lindoff and his wife, Diana, of Portland, Ore., Harvey Lindoff, of Hoonah, Timothy Lindoff, of Juneau, Charles Lindoff, of Portland, and Nick Lindoff, of Hoonah; nine nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and great-nephews, whom Jackie lovingly referred to as her grandchildren; maternal uncles, Harvey Marvin and his wife, Lillian, of Juneau, and Richard Marvin and his wife, Vera, of Sitka; paternal uncles, John Lindoff, of Juneau, Harold Martin and his wife, Jackie, of Juneau, John Martin Sr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Juneau; paternal aunts, Esther Kaze, of Hoonah, Frances Marvin, of Juneau, and Florence Bennett, of Hoonah; and numerous cousins from both the maternal and paternal sides.

Pallbearers are John Sharclane, David (John) Marvin, Richard Marvin Jr., Reggie Marvin, Moses Smith, and John White Sr.

Honorary pallbearers are John Martin Sr., John Lindoff, Esther Kaze, Harold Martin, Ronald Williams Sr., and Florence Bennett.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Glacier Valley Church of God, 8497 Thunder Mountain Road. Services in Hoonah will be announced at a later date.

Condolence cards and donations may be sent to Edwina White, 230 S. Franklin St., #508, Juneau, AK 99801.
