Juneau's got hair-band mania

Bust out the Aqua Net and spandex because the ultimate tribute to '80s hair bands is coming to Juneau.

Poison'd, a tribute to the legendary rock band Poison, and Red White & Crüe, the "world famous" Mötley Crüe tribute band, will perform at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at Marlintini's Lounge.

Hooligan caught up with Poison'd front man Scott Seville about his friendship with Poison singer Bret Michaels, the tribute band lifestyle, the resurgence of '80s glam-rock and the ultimate hair ballad, "Every Rose Has its Thorn."

Q: How did you get involved with the Poison tribute band?

A: I was doing original music and all and the guys say 'you kind of look like Bret Michaels and sound like him.' It kind of went from there. We had our first show going on, and everything just exploded. We started doing shows everywhere, all across America.

Q: So I understand you're friends with Bret Michaels and some of the band. When did you first meet Bret?

A: I met Bret before I was even doing a tribute. I was just doing original music and had a rock band on the side. I met Bret a couple of times and he was real nice to me and we got to be friends. I didn't even tell him I was doing a tribute for a long time and he found out and he kind of ragged me about it. But he really loves it because we sell all their stuff on our (Web site), you can buy all their merchandise, CDs and stuff like that. He gave me a hard time about it but he was laughing about it. He thought it was really, really cool and commended me about it. He says we're the best tribute he has ever seen and loves it.

Q: Both Mötley Crüe and Poison were pretty notorious for their backstage partying and hooking up with women. What's the lifestyle like for a tribute band front man?

A: Man, it's crazy. It's fun. We do it up all we can. It's a complete hell-raise fest. We have a good time at it.

Q: So do you guys party like rock stars then?

A: All we can. Every minute we can. If you're going to do a tribute and do it like this, you take all the comps that come with it.

Q: Can you describe what a Poison'd show is like?

A: A Poison'd show is over the top. My favorite song by Poison is "Nothin' But a Good Time," and it's nothin' but a good time. It's all light hearted, fun, no stress. It's just big '80s guitar and just fun rock 'n' roll. It's just fun music that everybody can relate to. It's stress-relieving rock 'n' roll.

Q: Poison has been pretty colorful through the years, both literally and metaphorically. How do you guys emulate the band?

A: If you come see a Poison'd show, it's the exact, to a T, show that you would come see if you (were) to see Poison themselves. Actually, the guys from Poison have said the exact thing. They're proud of it and if you love Poison, come see it. It's an exact replica.

Q: So you said "Nothin' But a Good Time" is one of your favorite songs. What are some of your other favorite Poison songs and why?

A: I like the obscure stuff, stuff you don't hear. Radio has a tendency to wear it out. "Talk Dirty to Me," "Every Rose Has its Thorn," they were all big hits in the '80s. But my favorite songs are like, "Look But You Can't Touch," the obscure B-side stuff that you don't hear on the radio all the time, it's what I like. It's not just Poison, but other artists.

Q: It seems like there is a resurgence of these '80s bands in the contemporary pop culture. Why do you think that is?

A: Probably about 5 years ago the big thing in the colleges was the big '70s parties where you come and dress up like the '70s disco. Now it's '80s big hair parties. I don't know, it's just so carefree. The big thing is people that are middle-aged now, they come out and go and have a good time and spend their money to lose themselves in what they had back then. They grew up in the '80s and now they go out and want to party but they don't really understand the new music so they go back to the '80s. Everything just revolves. It goes around and around. The '80s are back in, thank goodness. We love it. It's just a great party time.

Q: I think "Every Rose Has it's Thorn" is one of the greatest ballads. Is that a pretty popular song at the shows?

A: Man, all I got to do, when I strap on the 12-string and I strum just a G, C and D chord, the whole crowd knows I'm doing "Every Rose." Once I strum that chord ... I can't even get the lyrics out before the crowd starts singing it. It's very, very powerful. It's one of the biggest ballads ever written. You just really can't compare it to anything.

Q: What do you think Poison's legacy will be and where do they rank in the musical world?

A: If you think of '80s rock and think glam rock, the first band that comes to mind is Poison ... hands down. If kind of goes hand in hand with Mötley Crüe and that's why we hooked up with Red White and Crüe. If you think '80s rock, that's all you think about, that's the first thing that comes to mind, is Poison and Mötley Crüe. If you come to our show that's what you're going to see, the absolute biggest '80s rock party, and we hope everyone comes.
