Juneau girls sweep, JV boys split in Ketchikan

THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Freshman Crystal Barr scored a hat trick in her first game with the Juneau-Douglas High School girls soccer team, leading the Crimson Bears to a 7-0 victory over the Ketchikan Kings Friday in Ketchikan. On Saturday, Juneau claimed another 7-0 victory as senior Ella Magallanes and junior Erin Flynn scored two goals each.

The Juneau JV boys didn't fare as well as the Crimson Bears split their two-game series with the Ketchikan varsity at Norman Walker Field, near Ketchikan's Schoenbar Middle School. On Friday, Juneau claimed a 2-1 victory as Cameron Mitchell recorded two assists. But in Saturday's game, Ketchikan claimed a 7-0 victory as Weston Wade and Richard Harney scored twice each. Even though Juneau's JV boys team played the Ketchikan varsity, the games count as varsity matches in the region standings.

In Friday's girls game, Barr scored the game's first two goals -- the first on an assist from sophomore Callan Janowiec and the second on an assist from freshman Mikaela Rodriguez. Janowiec scored on an assist from Magallanes and senior Michael Kohan scored on an assist from sophomore Danielle Choquette to round out the first half's scoring. In the second half, Magallanes scored an unassisted goal, Barr scored with an assist from sophomore Liza Slotnick and Flynn scored on an assist from freshman Alida Bus. The shutout was shared by Bus and Janowiec, who replaced injured sophomore goalkeeper Amy Henderson for one half each.

In Saturday's game, Magallanes and Flynn both scored twice, Slotnick scored on a penalty kick, while Barr and Kohan scored once each. The assists were not available. Four people took turns in goal for Juneau, with senior Kristen Bressette, Choquette, Kohan and Barr sharing the shutout.

In Friday's boys game, Nathan Schroeder put Juneau on top 1-0 on an assist from Mitchell. But Wade scored on a penalty kick to tie the score at halftime. Juneau's game-winner was scored on a breakaway by Jeff Shin with an assist from Mitchell.

In Saturday's game, Ketchikan's Jim Auger scored on a rebound, Wade scored on a penalty kick and Wade scored again with an assist from Taylor Jones to give the Kings a 3-0 halftime lead. Harney scored on a penalty kick, Tyler Davis scored on an assist from Jones, Mark Anglin scored an unassisted goal and Harney scored an unassisted goal. Jon Demmert earned the shutout for Ketchikan with 10 saves.
