Val Synder poses for a picture Sunday in front of the stage for the 34th annual Alaska Folk Festival at Centennial Hall. Synder designed and painted this year's stage decoration with the help of Erik Chadwell and Jennifer Morrell. Synder said she was inspired by the trees on North Douglas. Five instruments have been painted into the design. The music festival begins today and continues through Sunday. Performances are free to the public.
