SEARHC announces mobile mammograms

SITKA - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium's Breast and Cervical Health Program has announced the spring 2008 schedule for the mobile mammogram program.

The mobile mammography van will visit Kake, Angoon, Haines, Yakutat and Skagway this spring and early summer.

The van is scheduled to visit Kake from April 21 to 23, Angoon from May 1 to 5, Haines from May 12 to 21, Yakutat from May 29 to June 3 and Skagway from June 9 to 12.

The mobile mammography program is run through a partnership between Bartlett Regional Hospital and the SEARHC Breast and Cervical Health Program. It makes regular mammography services available to women who live in communities where they aren't available year round.

"Each year, the mobile mammography unit provides mammograms for more than 550 women who might not otherwise receive this service," DeRensis said. "Regular mammograms are an important part of being a healthy woman."

The SEARHC Breast and Cervical Health Program provides free clinical breast exams and mammograms for all women ages 40-64 who meet income and insurance guidelines.

For more information, contact your local clinic, call the SEARHC Breast and Cervical Health Program in Sitka at 966-8782 (or 888-388-8782, toll-free in Alaska), or send e-mail to askwh@searhc.org.
