Chances it's worth your cash: Summer '09 edition
There will be no "Fired Up" review from yours truly. I talked my way out of that one, pitching instead the idea of a look ahead at some of 2009's most anticipated flicks. So with apologies to the 11 of you hoping for some insight on "Fired Up," let's get started.
And yes, I'm bringing back the very popular (to me) CIWYC rating system (chances it's worth your cash).
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (May 1) - We all have seen the "X-Men" trilogy; we all liked the first two. Perhaps a closer look at Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will erase the sour taste of "X-Men: The Last Stand." Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Live Schreiber (Sabretooth) co-star. Am I excited? My favorite part of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was seeing the first official trailer for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
CIWYC 90%
"Star Trek" (May 8) - I was not a nerd. Excuse me, that should say "Trekkie." However, this new big screen version has two things going for it. One, it debuts on the best date known to man. In unrelated news, I was born on this day. Two, J.J. Abrams is directing. He is the reason "Mission: Impossible 3" was solid, as well as the main reason Jennifer Garner's long running "Alias" on ABC was so fantastic. If anyone can turn me into a Trekkie it's Abrams.
CIWYC 65%
"Terminator Salvation" (May 21) - All those glimpses we got of the bleak future in the first three "Terminator" flicks come to fruition in this installment, directed by the world's biggest fan of slow-motion action scenes, McG. Christian Bale (John Connor) already provided some publicity for the movie (YouTube search "Christian Bale outburst," and have earmuffs ready), but it would seem like this is a can't miss recipe.
CIWYC 75%
"The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" (June 12) - A remake. Of a remake. Really? Really. Well, the 2nd one was made for TV, but still. When I first read about this re-remake, I was 100% on board. Director Tony Scott and stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta are all badasses. That said, the trailers have me a little worried.
CIWYC 50%
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" (June 24) - The good news is that if Denzel disappoints, you only have two weeks to wait before Michael Bay and a bunch of gigantic robots come to the rescue. The first "Transformers" was worth your cash - if you disagree there is little hope for you - and with all the important players remaining on board (including Shia LeBeouf), I'm ready for round 2. Yeah, I'm talking trash to the Decepticons.
CIWYC 100%
"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (Aug. 7) - Everyone knows G.I. Joe, even if they didn't play with the toys as tots. I'm surprised it took this long for the adaptation. Director Stephen Sommers brought us "The Mummy" and the good sequels (i.e. not the most recent one), and everybody loves Dennis Quaid (General Hawk). Too bad I have it on good authority from two sources I trust that the movie is terrible.
CIWYC 11%
"Surrogates" (Sept. 25) - I'm forcing a late September release into this column for one reason: Bruce Willis. Plus, this graphic novel adaptation sounds freaking cool regardless of my man-crush. I'm out of space so just trust me.
CIWYC 82%
As always, apologies to those who didn't make the cut: Will Ferrell, Harry Potter, Michael Mann, Adam Sandler and others I'm sure.
And hey, feel free to check out "Fired Up" to kill a couple hours before "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" debuts on May 1. Chances "Fired Up" is worth your cash: Seriously?
