Senate wants share of U.S. oil revenue

JUNEAU - The state Senate says Alaska deserves a share of future offshore oil production taxes and royalties from the federal government.

On Tuesday, it unanimously passed a resolution calling for Congress to share a portion of oil and gas revenues the federal government takes from this kind of production.

Sen. Bill Wielechowski, an Anchorage Democrat, sponsored the Senate Joint Resolution 17.

Wielechowski, who serves on the Senate Resources Committee, argued that Alaska should receive the same consideration as states in the Gulf of Mexico.

He added that the state needs the money for onshore work, such as public services, needed to support the offshore development in the Chukchi Sea.

The resolution will next be sent to the House for consideration.
