Mary Johnson Starr
Juneau resident Mary Johnson Starr died March 9, 2009. She was 87.
Born Oct. 20, 1921, in Angoon, to Mary and Jimmy Johnson, her Tlingit name was Woodaataa. She was an Eagle Woosh'ketaan.
She married Cooney C. Starr Sr. on March 17, 1940.
She was an active member of the Church of God while living in Juneau. She loved to sew moccasins, bead, read and travel. She traveled to California, Canada, Washington, D.C. and the White House, Hawaii, New Mexico, Maryland and Mexico.
She worked at Chatham Cannery, Hood Bay Cannery, Hawk Inlet Cannery, a nursing home in Seattle, Wash., a contract cleaning service in Juneau and at Bartlett Regional Hospital.
"She is a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren," her daughter said.
She is survived by her daughter, Rose Commodore, of Juneau; sons, Cooney Starr Jr., of Mescalero, N.M., Vincent Starr, of Angoon, Dennis Starr, of Juneau, and Melvin Starr Sr., of Angoon; nieces, Helen Brown, Phyllis Benson, Florence Davis, of Washington, Geraldine Nelson, Kathy Felipe, of Juneau, and Thelma Charles, of Anchorage; nephews, Franklin Johnson and Clifford Johnson, of Juneau; 10 grandchildren, Kathy Starr, of Juneau, Kelton Starr, of New Mexico, Timothy Starr, of Arizona, Tina B. Wilson, of California, Denise Jack (DeAnna Starr), Denni Starr and Dennelle Starr, of Angoon, Melvin Starr Jr., of Juneau, Michaelene Starr, Terry Proud, and Anthony Proud, of Anchorage; other relatives, Rachel Jennings, Diane Church, Lillian Parduhn, Victor Johnson, Angie Johnson and John Howard Sr.; and 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services were held March 11 at the Church of God. In Angoon, a service was held yesterday and burial will be held today.
