Haines boys advance to title game

The Haines High School boys basketball team advanced to the Class 3A Southeast Conference Tournament title game Thursday after downing Wrangell 79-67 at Juneau-Douglas High School gym.

With the win, the Glacier Bears will also advance to the Alaska School Activities Association State Basketball Championships in two weeks in Anchorage.

Haines sophomore Kyle Fossman exploded for a game-high 36 points to lead his team. The point guard made seven 3-pointers and hit 5 of 8 free throws in the win.

Orion Falvey added 16 points, Ame Cornacchione scored 13 points and James Hart added six points for Haines. Chandler Kemp also had two points in the win.

Robert Perry led Wrangell with 24 points while Ryan Howell added 16 points in the loss.

Also for the Wolves, Kenneth Wilson scored 13 points, Andrew Versteeg had nine points, Peter Wilson contributed four points and Erik Gile had two points in the win.

Haines will take on Petersburg today for the region title while Wrangell will play Mount Edgecumbe in the third-place game.

CLASS 4A BOYS BASKETBALL

Ketchikan 63, Sitka 44

Sitka put a scare into Ketchikan early but the Kings pulled away in the second half to advance to today's title game against Juneau-Douglas.

The Wolves led 14-7 after the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. The Kings bounced back, however. Jase Scudero scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and Damen Bell-Holter poured in a game-high 25 points for Ketchikan.

Paul Manabat had 10 points, Eric Pihl contributed seven points, Gunnar Farstad had four points while Corey White and Simeon Schum posted three points each for Kayhi.

Ryan Peters led Sitka with 10 points while Logan Lee and Ross Venneberg scored nine points each. Jeremy Espeleta had seven points, Ulisses Diaz scored five points and David Reynolds chipped in four points in defeat.

Kayhi will play the top-seeded Crimson Bears at 9:15 p.m. tonight for the Class 4A region title and the right to play in the state tournament. Sitka will take on the Class 3A second-place team in the crossover consolation round at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

CLASS 3A BOYS BASKETBALL

Petersburg 73, Mount Edgecumbe 49

Defending Class 3A region and state champions Petersburg routed Mount Edgecumbe on Thursday to advance to today's title game.

The Vikings also qualified for the state tournament in the win.

Cameron Severson, the defending Class 3A state player of the year, led the Vikings with 24 points. Cody Smith and Jordan Birchell tallied 15 points each, Casey Thompson scored eight points, Jon Mazzella had seven points while Ashon McCay and Kevin Akers scored two points each in the win.

Caleb McGraw scored 17 points to lead the Braves while Misa Beans and Josh Vo tallied eight points each.

Claude Young scored seven points, Hugh Patkotak had six points and Scott Alstrom hit a 3-pointer to pace Mount Edgecumbe.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mount Edgecumbe 48, Wrangell 30

Sara Morris and Charlea Kewan-Bartleson scored 12 points each as Mount Edgecumbe downed Wrangell in the Class 3A semifinals on Thursday.

The Braves rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to win the game.

Lori Wallace had nine points, Andrea Thomas scored eight points while Lillian Weber, Lainey Beaver and Emily Cronk scored two points each for Mount Edgecumbe. Nicole Pingayak hit a free throw in the win.

Michelle Villarma scored a team-high 13 points with two 3-point shots for the Wolves.

Britany Lindley had eight points, Courtney McCay tallied five points while Jessica Ritchie and Devyn Moody had two points each.

Mount Edgecumbe will take on Petersburg in the Class 3A finals today. Both teams will advance to the state tournament in Anchorage.

Petersburg 51, Haines 38

Three players scored in double figures for Petersburg in a 13-point semifinal win over Haines on Thursday.

Ruby McMahon led the Vikings with 14 points and went six for seven from the free throw line. Morgan Falter had 13 points, Ariel Norheim had 10 points and Erin Streuli scored six points in the win. Also for Petersburg, Shana Stewart scored three points, Courtney Curtiss and Emily Baldwin had two points each while Heidi Berg hit a free throw.

Haines' Teslyn Visscher racked up a team-high 12 points while Christine Hansen contributed nine points in the loss.

Also for the Glacier Bears, Stoli Lende had seven points, J.J. Lende scored four points, Sam Clay hit a 3-pointer, Abby Jones had two points and Carlee Heinmiller had one point in defeat.
