LOCAL JUNEAU EMPIRE On a narrow, tricky section of the Taku River, a tug escorting a barge to the Tulsequah Chief Mine got caught in a whirlpool Tuesday and tipped far to one side before righting itself, causing concern to onlookers and state regulators.

Whirlpool crossing: A tug tailing a Tulsequah Chief Mine barge almost capsizes when it's caught sideways by the Taku River current on Tuesday. Brad Pierce, in the orange rain gear, and Creighton Laurent are fishing in the foreground. The tug was attempting the downstream transit of the Canyon Island narrows. One crew member suffered a dislocated shoulder. The lead tug proceeded on down river without further incident.
