LOCAL JUNEAU EMPIRE Juneau homeowners' and some renters' electricity rates will likely quintuple next month. The city's electric utility will resort to running on diesel as the result of an avalanche Wednesday morning that cut hydroelectric power to the area.

Avalanche knocks out hydro power

Power disaster: Above, an electric transmission tower that was caught in the avalanche is shown Wednesday about three miles from the Snettisham Power House, about 40 miles south of Juneau. Electric rates in Juneau are expected to rise sharply as Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. switches to diesel power while the structures are repaired.
