GOLDMEDAL08 FOR THE JUNEAU EMPIRE Before there was Gold Medal basketball in Juneau, there were Lions. For nearly 64 years, Juneau Lions Club members served communities throughout Southeast Alaska. The club currently has 23 members, who passionately uphold the Lions Club International motto, "We serve."

REvered: Dr. Walter Soboleff, shown here at his Juneau home, serves as "Lion Monarch" for the Juneau Lions Club. The 99-year-old Tlingit elder has been associated with the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament since its 1947 inception. In the tournament's 62-year history, Soboleff said he's missed just three or four of the events.
