$100,000 tagged fish
Twelve salmon, not pink or chum, will be tagged and released in the derby grounds. In accordance with the rules of the sponsors' agent, only one of these twelve fish will pay the $100,000 prize. The number of the winning tag will be selected by the agent of the sponsors before the start of the derby and will not be known by derby officials or the sponsors.
When a tagged fish is turned in at a weigh-in station, derby officials will follow the agent's procedure for determining if the fish is the $100,000 fish. This may take 24 to 36 hours. Persons turning in any of the other eleven tagged fish will be awarded $1,000 from the Territorial Sportsmen, Inc.
If you catch a tagged fish, do not remove the tag from the fish. To be eligible for any tagged fish prizes the fish must be presented to Derby officials with the tag still attached to the fish. In order to receive the $100,000 prize the winner may be required by the sponsor's agent, not the sponsor, to pass a polygraph examination.
Be sure to turn in all salmon, except pink and chum, for the scholarship fund. Don't take the chance of eating a fish that could be worth up to $100,000.
'High fives'
Kennecott Greens Creek Mining Company and Coeur Alaska - Kensington Mine Project have combined to sponsor two special scholarship fish prize drawings. Two winners and two alternates will be drawn from the tickets given to scholarship fish contributors. Each winner (or in the case of a no-show, an alternate) will participate in a drawing on awards night with a chance of winning $50,000, $10,000, $2,500 or, at a minimum, $500.
Each contestant is given a series of 40 "High Fives" sealed money bags or envelopes. Each bag contains a prize-winning symbol representing one of four possible prizes: $50,000, $10,000, $2,500 or $500. The contestant starts opening the bags or envelopes in any order until they have five matching symbols. They have whatever prize is represented by the five matching symbols.
Top 100 prizes
The contestants who first catch the 100 largest salmon will win a prize. First prize goes to the largest fish, the 62nd prize goes to the 62nd top weight and prize number 100 is reserved for the person catching the 100th top weight.
After the award of the first, 62nd and 100th place prizes, the second place winner gets his or her choice of remaining prizes, then third, fourth and so on until all prizes are claimed. Only one of the top 100 prizes will be awarded to each contestant. In case of a tie, the earliest entered weighed fish will receive the highest standing. If winners or their designated representative are not present on Awards Night to claim prizes, unclaimed prizes shall be awarded in numerical order, according to winner's place.
The names of all prize winners will be made public as soon as possible after the list has been certified. Check online at www.goldennorthsalmonderby.org to see if you won a prize.
Derby prizes will be awarded beginning at 7 p.m. on the Thursday following the derby at Centennial Hall. Prize winners or designated representatives must attend Awards Night in order to claim their prize.
The official list of winners of the top 100 prizes will be on the Golden North Salmon Derby website on the Wednesday following the Derby, at the First National Bank on Front Street and at the Fred Meyer store bulletin board. Winners of Scholarship Fund prizes must claim their prize from the Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., on Awards Night unless otherwise instructed.
