Remember when? (Katie Henry)

photo: thisweek

Katie Henry grew up at the Alaska Folk Festival.

"It was kind of a cultish occurrence. It kind of sparked this decade of really spending a lot of time looking at society through the idea of body hair and how it affects people.

"There were people who thought it was gross - people who were offended by the subject matter and didn't particularly want to hear anybody talking about body hair.

"Everybody you will talk to has a little bit of trauma or at least notable events in their life that center around hair - either hair on your head or hair on your legs or a haircut that didn't work out. We told a lot of stories. I think some people thought it was a little too theatrical and not quite musical enough for the venue. I thought it was very much in the spirit."

- Katie Henry, Lebanon, N.H., on Women With Hair, 1988-1998
