Student symphony reading rehearsal set for Jan. 7

The Juneau Student Symphony will be hosting a reading rehearsal from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, in the Juneau-Douglas High School band room.

This is an opportunity to experience an orchestral rehearsal with a group of like-minded musicians. The rehearsal is open to all ages and ability levels.

Inaugural Gold Street music concert slated for Jan. 5

The first in a planned series of monthly Gold Street music concerts is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Tickets are available at the door. The church is located at 740 W. 10th St. downtown.

The lineup for this month's concert includes Riley Woodford; Sean Tracey and Maridon Boario; Rainee Godwin, Paul Disdier and June Hall; and Buddy Tabor.

Midwinter Vocal Festival features classes, performance

Juneau Lyric Opera will host the 2008 Midwinter Vocal Festival from Dec. 29 through Jan. 5 at Northern Light United Church.

Guest artist Byron McGilvray will lead workshop classes in group voice, reading and the festival chorus for the opera's 19th annual festival.

Three class sessions are devoted to reading music and the basics of how to move around a musical score. Those classes will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, and from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday, Dec. 30 and Jan. 1.

Classes on group voice and the basic instruction in good vocal techniques will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 2-4.

Festival chorus practices will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29; from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30; from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 1 through 4; and beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5.

The festival will culminate with a festival chorus performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the church.
