Gadget tidbits

McClathcy Newspapers
Good value: Though the Samsung BlackJack II doesn't bring any revolutionary upgrades, there are a number of welcome additions, including GPS and better performance, making it a worthy successor and a good-value smartphone.
Samsung BlackJack II (AT&T)

The Samsung BlackJack II not only features a revamped design that includes a slightly larger screen and a better keyboard, but there's been work done under the hood to solve some of the performance issues of the past.

EDITORS' RATING: 7.7, very good

THE GOOD: The Samsung BlackJack II improves on its predecessor with Windows Mobile 6; GPS; a 2-megapixel camera; and more memory and better performance. The smartphone also features a larger display and enhanced full QWERTY keyboard as well as HSDPA support, Bluetooth , and AT&T Video Share support.

THE BAD: The front jog wheel feels loose and unresponsive, and the smartphone uses Samsung's proprietary connector port for headsets and other accessories. The BlackJack II lacks Wi-Fi, and there's also no support for voice dialing. We also had some ActiveSync connection problems.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Though the Samsung BlackJack II doesn't bring any revolutionary upgrades, there are a number of welcome additions, including GPS and better performance, to make it a worthy successor and a good-value smartphone.

Mitsubishi WD-65833

With increasing competition as TV makers slash prices, this model is no bargain considering what you get in terms of performance.

EDITORS' RATING: 6.8, good

THE GOOD: Reproduces a deep level of black; accurate initial grayscale; detailed color and tint adjustments; great connectivity with a total of four HDMI inputs; attractive design.

THE BAD: Relatively expensive; inaccurate color decoding and primary colors that cannot be fixed using main menu adjustments; noisy video processing; smooth 120Hz mode does not remove judder.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The DLP-based Mitsubishi WD-65833 turned in a disappointing performance especially for the company's flagship rear-projection HDTV.
