Gadget tidbits

McClatchy Newspapers
Versatile: The 30GB Ibiza Rhapsody is a jack-of-all-trades media player that encompasses emerging wireless technologies.
LG Venus VX8800

The LG Venus is a stunningly beautiful phone with a unique dual-screen design that also features onscreen touch-sensitive controls.

Editors' rating: 8.0, excellent.

The good: The LG Venus has a unique dual-screen design with onscreen navigation controls that change layout depending on the application, plus it has vibrating feedback when touched. It also comes with a wealth of multimedia features, EV-DO support, plus great performance.

The bad: The LG Venus's touch screen is a bit gimmicky and takes some getting used to, and there aren't any touch-sensitivity settings for it. The camera has no flash and no self-portrait mirror.

The bottom line: The LG Venus is a beautiful slider phone with a great feature set, but we would recommend taking the time to get used to the unusual touch-screen controls.

Ibiza Rhapsody (30GB, white)

The 30GB Ibiza Rhapsody is a jack-of-all-trades media player that encompasses emerging wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi music downloading and stereo audio streaming via A2DP Bluetooth.

Editors' rating: 7.7, very good.

The good: The Ibiza Rhapsody offers about every feature in the book, including Wi-Fi and stereo Bluetooth capabilities; podcast support with wireless updating; photo, video, and subscription music support; on-the-go access to Rhapsody. It's easy to use, the interface is well-implemented, and the processor is powerful.

The bad: The Ibiza Rhapsody is expensive compared with competitors, and it has copycat looks. It also lacks EQ enhancement options and has a poor rated battery life. Works with XP and Vista only.

The bottom line: The Haier America Ibiza Rhapsody is a cutting-edge media player that puts its wireless capabilities to good use while still retaining a user-friendly design and interface. If you're willing to shell out the dough for a massive feature list, give it consideration.
