A year and a half since opening her own studio, glass artist Heidi Johnson debuts with her first major show this month at The Creating Place downtown.

Her premiere couldn't be more auspicious since it coincides with Gallery Walk on Friday, Dec. 7. Gallery Walk is the year's biggest single-day arts event with downtown stores and galleries staying open later, numerous art shows and performances debuting, and even Santa Claus rumored to show up.

Johnson is relishing her opportunity to exhibit her preferred method of glassmaking, which uses a kiln to fuse and bend pieces of glass at temperatures up to 1,700 degrees. The "warm-glass" method offers her a chance to play with the way light passes through glass.

"The public will get a chance to see warm-glass," she said of her first show. "It'll also give me a chance to talk with people and discuss custom lighting."

Johnson describes her pieces as architectural compositions, such as lampshades and tableware, but stressed that each piece is unique. She isn't a production artist creating the same piece time and again.

Johnson, who also runs a private speech therapy practice, started working with warm glass after taking a class five years ago. It took her a while to acquire the tools necessary to open up Raven's Eye Studios.

"This is an equipment-intensive art form," she said, adding that over time her husband has seen his workshop space shrink.

"I'm starting to get bigger tools than he does," she said.

Johnson will be sharing space at the shop on 226 Seward St. with Tasha Walen and Lincoln Farabee from Basement Studios. Their combined exhibit is called "Warm Night, Cold Glass" and will feature glass tile, jewelry, and tableware.

In addition to Johnson and Walen's show, many other exhibits and events are planned for Gallery Walk. Below is a roundup of Gallery Walk events:

Alaska State Museum, 395 Whittier St.: The museum will offer selections from the Alaska State Council on the Arts' "Art Bank." The show chronicles the development of Alaska art over the past 30 years with work by 37 artists.

Annie Kaillís, 244 Front St.: Four Southeast artists take to the walls of the Front Street gallery: Brena Schwartz, a Wrangell marine artist; Sandra Greba, a Sitka watercolorist; Rob Roys, a Juneau abstract artist; and Karen Beason, a Juneau paper artist.

Artist AmongUs Gallery, Emporium Mall: University of Alaska Southeast art student Rebekah Garcia will exhibit her works representing Adam and Eve on sheetrock, and Rob Korpela of VisionKraze will display new acrylic paintings at the gallery in Suite 211 above Heritage Coffee.

Back Room at the Silverbow Inn, 120 Second St.: Damon Stuebner and Rebecca Tyson Smith offer a photographic exhibit called "From the Point: Images from Point Retreat Lighthouse." The show and reception will run from 4:30 through 7 p.m.

The Canvas Community Art Studio & Gallery, 223 Seward St.: REACH artists will feature their latest work in a show called "No Two Alike." The gallery will be open from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Native storyteller Gary Waid also will perform at 7 p.m.

Downtown library, 292 Marine Way: The library invites the public to "Celebrate Winter" by sharing their prose and poetry at 7 p.m. Each presentation should be five minutes or less.

Glory Hole, South Franklin Street: Gallery walkers can drop by the homeless shelter to view "Out of the Rain," a collection of photos capturing true stories of homelessness by Juneau photographers. The exhibit will be open from 4:30 to 7 p.m., with a special reception at 5:30. The exhibit will move to the Nugget Mall later in the month.

Juneau Arts & Culture Center, 350 Whittier St.: The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council presents a show by the Plein Rein Painters called "Weather."

In addition, Juneau Jazz & Classics will hold an open house in celebration of its new digs at the center. A quartet from the Juneau String Ensemble will provide music from 5 to 7 p.m. during the open house and the Plein Rein reception.

Right after Gallery Walk, the center will be hopping with an all-ages dance hosted by the groove-based fusion band BRAVEmonkey. For more information, see story on Page 8.

Juneau Artists Gallery, 175 S. Franklin St.: Charlie Detjen will exhibit his latest batch of pysanky eggs, a Ukrainian art form featuring colorful and intricate designs created with dyes and beeswax. Some are as large as ostrich eggs with the smallest the size of quail eggs.

Juneau-Douglas City Museum, Fourth and Main streets: The museum continues its partnership with the Juneau Underground Motion Picture Society with a showcase of past films from the group's biannual film festivals. The museum will feature a different festival each month in its video room through April.

Rainy Day Books, 113 Seward St.: Sportsmen and those with sportsmen on their holiday lists are invited to meet author and licensed fishing guide J. Kevin Curry, who will sign copies of "Rip Some Lips" beginning at 6 p.m.

Ruby Room, Emporium Mall: The downtown gallery, tucked in between Heritage Coffee and Gold Town Nickelodeon, will feature new work by artists Pat Race and Sarah Asper-Smith.

Valentine's Coffee House, 111 Seward St.: Juneau painter Jim Fowler's latest exhibit, "New Landscapes," will open with a reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by a performance of the Robert Cohen Jazz Group at 6 p.m.
