Arts & Culture in brief

Canvas to hold East Indian dinner auction on Dec. 8

JUNEAU - The Canvas Art Studio will host an authentic East Indian Dinner and art auction on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8.

The silent art auction, with a no-host bar, begins at 6 p.m. Dinner follows at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person, and credit cards will be accepted in person or over the phone. Credit card payments will also be accepted in person or over the phone.

Proceeds will help REACH finish the new space's pottery studio and pie kitchen.

Weimer finishes outdoormural of the Silverbow

JUNEAU - Juneau artist Arnie Weimer has completed his large outdoor mural at The Silverbow Inn.

Jill Ramiel and Ken Alper bought the Silverbow Inn and Bakery almost 12 years ago in downtown Juneau. Soon after, they also obtained the rights to paint a mural on the NEA building next door.

Weimer showed up carrying a quirky, whimsical watercolor depicting the Silverbow.

"One day he came in with a framed copy of it," Ramiel said. "It was very exciting; it really captures the quirky character of the Silverbow."

Weimer said he was working on a community project and the mural would be a perfect location. The results are now on display outside the Silverbow.

"We love community art," Ramiel said. "It's too dreary here to not try to have some fun with color. Is there anyone out there that wants to turn our giant propane tank into a submarine, or maybe a bee?"
