Seattle's Canote brothers to play Friday, Saturday
JUNEAU - Seattle twin brothers Greg and Jere Canote will play a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Resurrection Lutheran Church at Glacier Avenue and 10th Street.
The Canotes play vintage American styles, from fiddle tunes and country songs to novelty numbers and swing. They have been performed at Seattle's Bumbershoot, the Vancouver (British Columbia) Folk Festival, the Fiddle Tunes Festival in Port Townsend, First Night in Tacoma and on "A Prairie Home Companion."
Admission to Friday's show is $15.
On Saturday, the Canotes will teach two workshops at the church: "Silly Songs" from 10:30 a.m-noon and "String Band Workshop" from 1:30-3 p.m. The courses cost $10 and sign-up is at the door.
On Saturday night, they'll play a dance at St. Ann's Parish Hall for contras, squares and waltzes, with dance caller Tom Paul. Beginning instruction starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission also is $10 at the door.
Albert McDonnell will join the band on bass both nights.
The weekend is sponsored by the Alaska Folk Festival and Juneau Contradancers.
Student Symphony, Youth Choir to perform Saturday, Sunday
JUNEAU - The Juneau Student Symphony and the Alaska Youth Choir will present a "Symphonic Choral Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the new Juneau Arts & Culture Center in the former National Guard Armory.
Admission is free, and donations are welcome.
The program includes: Verdi's "Nabucco Overture" and "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves"; J.S. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"; Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus from the "Messiah"; and Accolay's "Violin Concerto," featuring soloist Colin Zheng.
Opera to GO! to present 'Opera Spotlight' Saturday, Sunday
JUNEAU - Opera to GO! will present "Opera Spotlight," its first production of the 2007-08 season, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
The performances will feature some of Juneau's finest singers - old-timers and newcomers.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and college students, and $5 for high school students and younger.
The singers for "Opera Spotlight" include: Cathy Pashigian, Wendy Byrnes, Therese Thibodeau, Philippe Damerval, Cyndee Sugar, Ardyne Womack, Cheryl Crawford, Brett Crawford and Tiffany G. Hanson.

Serrano to teach Brazilian dance at UAS on Nov. 10-11
JUNEAU - Visiting instructor Pauline Serrano will teach a Brazilian dance workshop at the University of Alaska Southeast activities center on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11.
Saturday's schedule: samba 1, noon-1:30 p.m.; samba 2, 2:30-4 p.m.; partner dancing, 5-6 p.m.
Sunday's schedule: samba 3, 11:30-1 p.m.; samba 4, 3-4:30 p.m.
General fees are $10 per class, or $40 for all classes. For students, it's $7 per class or $30 for all courses. Sign up at the door.
Serrano will also present a demonstration during the Salsa Borealis concert at Zephyr on the evening of Friday, Nov. 9.

Pianist Shannon Curtis to play UAS Egan Lecture Hall Saturday
JUNEAU - Los Angeles pianist Shannon Curtis will perform 9 p.m. Saturday at the University of Alaska Southeast Egan Lecture Hall.
Admission is $5 for nonstudents, free for students.
The Los Angeles Times described her musical style as a cross between Fiona Apple and Norah Jones.
Her first album, "Boomerangs and Seesaws," was released July 2007.
