Rendezvous to host silent auction, cabaret for Perseverance

JUNEAU - Rendezvous will host a silent auction and cabaret performed by the cast of "Yeast Nation," as a benefit for Perseverance Theatre.

The show starts at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, and it's a nonsmoking event.

A $5 suggested donation will be collected at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the theater.

'Honky-Tonk Habit' set for Alaskan on Friday, Saturday

JUNEAU - Noted Haines performers Kris and Lindy Jones will join Sean Tracey, Bob Banghart and assorted guests for "Honky-Tonk Habit," a special weekend of country music from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20, at the Alaskan Hotel & Bar.

The shows are for those 21 and over.

Rendezvous to start 'Guitar Hero III' nights on Oct. 28

JUNEAU - Rendezvous is starting an all-new, four-week "Guitar Hero" competition in conjunction with the Oct. 28 release of "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock."

The bar will host weekly competitions every Sunday night from Oct. 28 to Nov. 18. Each evening's winner will receive either a game or a wireless controller.

There will be a qualifying round leading up to the grand championship finale on Saturday, Nov. 24. There, the winner will receive a new game system.

Songwriter Don Sineti to perform at Mendenhall Valley library

JUNEAU - Folksinger, songwriter, part-time chanteyman, historian and long-neck five-string banjo picker Don Sineti will stop by the Mendenhall Valley branch of the library for a performance at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Sineti has been singing about whales, dolphins, porpoises, ships and the marine environment for the last 20 years. He's also an award-winning marine mammal illustrator who has written a handful of books.

Symphony's 'World Beats'set for Saturday, Sunday

JUNEAU - The Juneau Symphony's begins its 2007-08 season this weekend with "World Beats," a program featuring Latin American rhythms and music from around the world.

Guest Mexican percussionist Ricardo Gallardo will play Venezeualan maracas on the Ricardo Lorenz piece "Pataruco" and djembe on the Marcelo Gaete piece "Lacandonia."

Concerts start at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Juneau-Douglas High School auditorium. Tickets are available at Hearthside Books, at 586-HORN or at the door.

The program also includes Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance," the first movement from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Symphony No. 25," Alexander Borodin's "Polovtsian Dance from Prince Igor" and George Gershwin's "American in Paris."
