Martinez to play tribute to Grieg on Saturday

JUNEAU - Jim Martinez, a classically trained jazz pianist, will play the Norwegian stylings of Edvard Grieg at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Chapel by the Lake.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $6 for children 12 and under. Doors open at 7:15 p.m.

The concert is sponsored by the Sons of Norway, Svalbard Lodge of Juneau.

Martinez, the minister of music at the River Valley Church in Rancho Cordova, Calif., is a regular opener for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and has recorded with the Stan Kenton Alumni, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Lionel Hampton and others. He lived in Kodiak in the mid-1980s.

He has performed with the Sacramento Symphony and toured as a featured guest artist with the U.S. Air Force Jazz Band. Martinez has released 10 CDs. For more, see www.jimmartinez.com.

Grieg (1843-1907), a Romantic-period composer, is best known for orchestral, piano and choral music that used Norwegian folk songs and dances in rhythms, melodies and harmonies. His most well-known pieces are "Piano Concerto in A Minor" and the score to Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt."

Truax to head October's Gold Street Music showcase

JUNEAU - Mike Truax will headline this month's Gold Street Music showcase beginning 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Resurrection Lutheran Church at 10th Street and Glacier Avenue.

The rest of the lineup includes Stewart Ely, Ed Schoenfeld and the Empty Oil Barrel Band, Alan Michael and Martha DeFreest.

Gold Street Music is a nonprofit group hosting monthly concerts of folk and acoustic music by Juneau and Southeast Alaska musicians. As is tradition, each act is allowed about 20 minutes on stage.

Tickets cost $5 at the door, and refreshments will be sold.

Intermediate salsa classto start at The Canvas

JUNEAU - Heather Haugland and Antonio Diaz are canceling their Wednesday night intermediate salsa class at Pavitt Health & Fitness and starting an intermediate-advanced class from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at The Canvas Community Art Studio & Gallery at Third and Seward streets.

The class is $7 for adults and $5 for students.

Also, Salsa Borealis is scheduled to play Friday, Oct. 12, at Centennial Hall. Look to next week's Hooligan for more information.
