Juneau Dance Unlimited to celebrate new studio

JUNEAU - Juneau Dance Unlimited will celebrate its new dance studio with an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8420 Airport Blvd., Suite 202 in the new Alaska Litho Building.

The public is welcome.

The evening will feature tours of the studio, appetizers, nonalcoholic beverages and door prizes.

The celebration will conclude with a grand prize drawing for a night at Grandma's Feather Bed.

Juneau Dance Unlimited is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing dance instruction and performance opportunities throughout the year. Class offerings include ballet, hip-hop, jazz, creative movement and studies in movement for students of all ages and levels of ability.

Charter School to present 'The Light Princess'

JUNEAU - About 60 students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, will perform in the Juneau Community Charter School's presentation of "The Light Princess" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Northern Light United Church.

The show is free to the public.

"The Light Princess" is an adaptation of George MacDonald's fairy tale about a princess who loses her gravity. The production is set in Spain and incorporates Spanish language as part of the school's language curriculum component. It also includes original music by guitarist and Spanish teacher Rick Bellagh.

Dolitsky to sign books at Hearthside on Thursday, Friday

JUNEAU - Hearthside Books will host two book signings this weekend for Alexander Dolitsky, author of "Allies in Wartime: The Alaska-Siberia Airway During World War II."

The writer will be at the Nugget Mall store at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4. He also will be at the downtown store at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, during the First Friday art walk.

"Allies in Wartime" is a collection of articles, essays and speeches that illuminate the Alaska-Siberia Airway during World War II.

Dolitsky was born and raised in Kiev in the former Soviet Union. He visited Alaska for the first time in 1981, settled in Sitka and moved to Juneau in 1986. He was the project manager for the World War II Alaska-Siberia Lend Lease Memorial, which was erected in 2006 in Fairbanks.

Library to host author, Pan-Asian movie night

JUNEAU - Juneau author Emily Wall will read from new her book "Freshly Rooted" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at the downtown public library.

The following day, the library will host a Pan-Asian potluck at 7 p.m. The dinner will be followed by a screening of "Straight, No Chaser" with Thelonious Monk.
