One tough lady

Both guns blazing: Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, a bio-engineered killing machine, in "Resident Evil: Extinction."
The big screen is dominated by males in the hero roles, especially in the action genre. It is the safe way to play it, and Hollyweird is hardly a place for risks.

Female leads in an action picture? No thanks. Give us an aging Bruce Willis, or a 65-year-old Harrison Ford. It can be a little irritating for some, I'm sure, to see females consistently pigeonholed as love interests. For these folks, I give you "Resident Evil: Extinction."

"Extinction" is the third (and supposedly final) chapter in the "Resident Evil" franchise based on the video game of the same name. The plot can get a little heavy, but if you find yourself in the theater for this one, chances are you at least know the basics, which are: The evil Umbrella Corp. has managed to unleash a virus that has turned almost everyone into flesh-eating zombies, causing the planet to quickly turn into a barren wasteland.

Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, who was experimented on by the corporation in the earlier films. To put it simply, she kicks ass.

This was my prevailing thought as I watched Jovovich on screen. I'm the biggest Bruce Willis fan you will find, and I loved "Live Free or Die Hard," but I can say with certainty that Alice would take about four seconds to take apart John McClane if she felt so inclined. Granted, her character has been genetically altered, but still!

An example of her action prowess comes toward the start of "Extinction," when Alice responds to a plea for help being broadcast from an abandoned radio station. As it turns out, an undead family has taken to luring innocents to their radio station, then murdering and eating them. The family captures Alice, handcuffs her and releases the dogs (also undead) in hopes of enjoying the spectacle. Then Alice goes to work. The cannibal family gets their spectacle; their last one.

The scene isn't crucial to the plot, but I mention it because it is the first time we get to see Jovovich completely take over the screen.

Meanwhile, under Las Vegas, the doctor who experimented on Alice in the previous film is recklessly cloning her over and over again because Alice's blood is the key to an anti-virus.

On the surface, Alice hooks up with a convoy of survivors, led by super-tough Ali Larter, who roam North America avoiding zombies and pilfering gasoline from every small town they can. Big cities are avoided because of their tendency to feature mass quantities of zombies.

Larter and company attempt to flee to - where else? - Alaska for the hope of a virus-free world. But small-town gas stations are drying up, and the survivors are forced to risk entering Las Vegas for gasoline.

When Alice and crew show up in Vegas, all the elements are in place for the finale. The action that ensues on the sand-engulfed strip is fun to watch, but eventually Alice heads underground to take on the evil doctor. And guess what happens?

She kicks ass. I cannot say that enough.

I will refrain from playing spoiler except to say that the ending does two things:

1. It leaves ample wiggle room for a fourth installment to the franchise.

2. It involves Alice's clones and it finishes "Extinction" on a really, really cool note.
