Barn dance starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Hall

JUNEAU - Happy To Be Here and dance caller Jim Grammel will headline the New England Barn Dance at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Centennial Hall.

All dances will be taught, and beginners are welcome. No partners are necessary. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes for dancing.

The dance costs $8 for the public, $7 for members of the Alaska Folk Festival and Juneau International Folk Dancers, and $5 for seniors and students. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m.

KTOO's Festival of Seafood to be held Sept. 22

JUNEAU - KTOO's annual Festival of Seafood is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The K3 stations (KTOO, KRNN and KXLL), Taku Smokeries and the Alaska Brewing Co. will be hosting the annual celebration.

The evening will kick off at 4 p.m., with a tutored beer tasting, followed from 5-7:30 p.m. with a seafood dinner featuring halibut, salmon, shrimp, salad and more.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids under 12, and available at KTOO, Hearthside Books and the door.

In other KTOO events news, the station is looking for donations for its semiannual used record, CD, DVD, VHS sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

Ballroom dance set for Sept. 14 at Centennial Hall

JUNEAU - A ballroom dance will be held from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Centennial Hall.

Guest instructors Heather Haugland and Antonio Diaz will teach merengue. The music will be suitable for ballroom and Latin dances.

The $5 admission includes a lesson. Juneau International Folkdancers are sponsoring the dance. For more information, call 209-8367.

The next dance is Oct. 12.

Rueda, salsa lessons at the Canvas start up for fall

JUNEAU - A rueda club started Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Canvas. Lessons will be held Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. No partners are necessary.

Rueda is the form of salsa danced in a circle and based on calls.

Beginning salsa classes also will be offered at the Canvas and Pavitt Health & Fitness. Classes at the Canvas begin Sept. 13 and will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Classes at Pavitt Health & Fitness begin Sept. 14 and will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Fridays.

There also will be intermediate salsa classes, beginning Sept. 19, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
