Gadget tidbits

Well-balanced: Toshiba's Satellite A215's ample memory and big hard drive offset the low-end AMD processor, making it a good deal among 15-inch mainstream laptops.
HTC Advantage X7501 (Athena)

The HTC Advantage X7501 is a tricky gadget to categorize. It doesn't neatly fit into the mold of a smart phone nor does it exactly work like an ultramobile PC.

Editors' rating: 7.0, very good.

The good: The HTC Advantage X7501 features a large, gorgeous display and offers integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and GPS. The Windows Mobile 6 mobile computer offers document viewing and editing, push e-mail and Web browsing. It's also equipped with a 3-megapixel camera and a full QWERTY keyboard.

The bad: The Advantage is bulky and heavy, and the keyboard is cramped. The design makes it hard to use as a phone, and even then, the speakerphone is on the weaker side.

The bottom line: The HTC Advantage X7501 is a powerful mobile computer for on-the-go professionals, delivering a full feature set and speedy performance. However, it will probably only appeal to early adopters and gadget hounds.

Toshiba Satellite A215

Toshiba's latest mainstream laptop occupies the sweet spot between price and features, packing in a generous 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM for $999.

Editors' rating: 6.7, good.

The good: Sturdy construction yet sleek design; ample RAM and hard-drive capacity for less than $1,000; includes extras such as a Labelflash optical drive and a Webcam; speakers provide passable audio.

The bad: AMD processor can't keep up with Intel competition; no Bluetooth option; no option for nonglossy screen.

The bottom line: Toshiba's Satellite A215 is a well-balanced budget laptop. Its ample memory and big hard drive offset the low-end AMD processor, making the A215 a good deal among 15-inch mainstream laptops.
