The sweet taste of victory: Jenny Baxter, a bartender at the Rendezvous, samples her winning drink, "The C.P. Shaker," during Cocktail Challenge II on Friday, Sept. 7, at Marlintini's Lounge. She won an iPod nano for her potent mix of rum 151, Kahlua, Baileys and Buttershots. |

In a shocking conclusion just moments before the witching hour Friday evening/Saturday morning at Marlintini's Lounge, a celebrity panel declared Rendezvous bartender Jenny Baxter the winner of Cocktail Challenge II for her variation on the tried and true "Slippery Nipple."
As you may recall, a few weeks ago Hooligan asked the community-at-large to create a drink that somehow incorporated fire.
Baxter's interactive "C.P. Shaker," which requires cupping a hand over the snifter and performing a little dance to properly mix the drink, adds rum 151 to a sweet and potent mix of Kahlua, Baileys and Buttershots.
The Alaskan Bar's concoction - dreamed up by Darin Maginnes, Luke Metcalfe, Beau Nergargler and Keith Crocker - was a close second. It also used Kahlua and Baileys, but dropped a flaming shot into a reservoir of Guinness.
"We have created this drink with the idea of recreating the effect of Aurora Borealis and the twinkling of the fall/winter nighttime sky in Alaska with the sprinkling of sugar as the gas pipeline supplies a natural resource to it's consumers," they wrote. "We hope you look favorably on our recipe, and thank you for the opportunity to do so."
Here's a look at the six drinks submitted for Cocktail Challenge II:
FIRST PLACE
Jenny Baxter
Bartender: The Rendezvous
Drink: "The C.P. Shaker"
1 part Kahlua
1 part Baileys
½ part Buttershots
1/5 part 151
1 ice cube
Directions: Yes, this is a slippery nipple with rum 151. The unusual part is the "shaker." Layer your slippery nipple and float a little 151 in a small snifter.
Note: This drink takes a little hand-eye coordination, and a dry run should be performed with an empty glass before attempting the "shake" with the real deal. Cup your palm over the snifter. Your palm must seal the snifter completely or you may have a bad "nipple" experience.
Coat your palm with the ice cube. Light the 151. Seal the snifter with your palm. As the flame burns out, a vacuum will be created and the snifter will suck to your palm. Keep your hand relaxed and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, "do the shake," release the suction and enjoy!
SECOND PLACE
Darin Maginnes, Luke Metcalfe, Beau Nergargler and Keith Crocker
Bartenders: The Alaskan Bar
Drink: "Untitled"
1 ounce Irish cream (Baileys)
1 ounce French vanilla Kahlua
1 ounce Bacardi 151 rum
Dash sugar
7 ounces Guinness stout
1 shot glass
1 16-ounce pint glass
Directions: Pour Kahlua and Baileys into the shot glass and float the rum 151 on top. Fill the pint glass half full with Guinness and set both glasses on the bar. Light the shot, then sprinkle the sugar above the flame to create a small sparkling effect. Carefully drop the flaming shot into the stout and proceed to chug the concoction before it coagulates.
OTHER ENTRIES
Ben Brown
Bartender: Doc Water's Pub
Drink: "The Natural Gas Pipeline"
4/5 of 1 pint of Alaskan Brewing Co. beer of choice
1 teaspoon of Yukon Jack
1 shot of champagne (Veuve-Clicquot is ideal, but any bubbly will do)
1 tablespoon of Everclear
Directions: Take a chilled pint glass and fill it four-fifths full. The room at the top must be sufficient for the other ingredients and the flame. Choice of which Alaskan Brewing Co. beer is a matter of personal taste, but the lighter beers tend to mix flavors most appreciably with the liqueur and champagne. Alaskan Pale is ideal, but Summer Ale is a close second.
Pour the Yukon Jack as a layer on top of the beer, using a spoon if necessary to introduce the liqueur down the inside of the glass so it remains atop the beer. Repeat this process with the Everclear so it's the top layer.
Fill a shot glass with champagne. Light the rum on fire and drop the shot through the flames into the shot glass. If you're stupid, drink. If you're not, extinguish the flames before enjoying. Repeat until Alaska's North Slope natural gas reserves are sold to some one, somewhere.
Erik Emert
Bartender: The Rendezvous
Drink: "White Fang"
1 ounce Kahlua
2 ounces espresso (coffee could be used in a pinch)
¼ ounce creme de cacao dark

Chocolate
Sugar
Directions: In a shaker, add the Kahlua, espresso, chocolate milk, creme de cacao dark and Cointreau.
In a martini glass: Sugar the rim (use a little cherry juice) and add 1/8 ounce (a splash) of 151. Hold the glass at an angle and light the 151. Spin the glass slowly a couple of times then set down. Once the sugar has caramelized blow out the flame.
Dump the contents of the martini glass into the shaker. Shake and strain the contents back into the martini glass. Float a little 151 (a dash) and light. Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg on the flames with a little pizzazz!
