Burrows service set for Friday at Chapel by the Lake

JUNEAU - There will be a musical memorial service for longtime Juneau Lyric Opera singer Stan Burrows at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Chapel by the Lake.

Burrows, a well-known tenor in town, died Aug. 30.

The general choir will be singing "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "It Is Well With My Soul" and "Promises to Keep." Practice starts at 3 p.m. Friday. A men's chorus is performing as well.

African Children's Choir to perform Sept. 11, 13

JUNEAU - The African Children's Choir will visit Juneau-Douglas High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Auke Bay Bible Church at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.

Since its inception in 1984, the choir has been comprised of children between the ages of 7 and 11 who have lost one or both parents to poverty or disease.

A group of 30 boys and girls travel the world for one year to raise funds to provide a better way of life back in Africa. Once they have completed their concert tour, they will return to their homelands to attend school.

Thursday Night contraseason begins Sept. 6

JUNEAU - Jerry Fiscus and dance caller Odette Foster will play the first Thursday Night Contra Dance of the season from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Terry Miller Legislative Offices gymnasium.

All dances will be taught and beginners are welcome. No partners are necessary. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes for dancing. A $3 donation will be accepted at the door.

Sons of Norway to present potluck, Grieg program

JUNEAU - The Sons of Norway will host a potluck at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Juneau Yacht Club, immediately followed by a 7:30 p.m. program on the life of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907).

David Moe will speak on the Romantic arts movement in Norway from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s and how Grieg influenced the music of his time. Grieg is best known for orchestral, piano, choral music and songs that utilized Norwegian folk tunes throughout the music.

The Saturday event is a cultural-educational program leading up to pianist Jim Martinez' concert of Grieg's music at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Chapel by the Lake.

Martinez has released nine CDs, and his recordings are available at www.jimmartinez.com. He has recorded with Lionel Hampton, the Stan Kenton Alumni, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and others.
