'Georgia Rule' lays down the law on DVD
Lindsay Lohan's a rebellious teen who's constantly in trouble in this critical and commercial flop that's a fictionalized narrative, not a documentary of the actress' real-life crises. Lohan stars as a misbehaving daughter whose mom packs her off to spend the summer with grandma, a no-nonsense woman ruling her homestead with a stern hand. The DVD has deleted scenes with commentary from director Garry Marshall, who also provides commentary for the full movie. The disc also has a making-of featurette and segments on Marshall and the three lead actresses. DVD, $29.98.
"Delta Farce"
Three buddies head out for a weekend of boozing and shooting, only to be mistaken for Army Reservists and packed onto a military plane bound for Iraq. After they're accidentally ejected over Mexico, the three believe they've made it to Iraq and wind up in a battle with a local crime boss laying siege to a village. DVD, $28.98; Blu-ray, $39.99.
"The Wind That Shakesthe Barley"
It's brother against brother in this drama starring Cillian Murphy as a young medical student caught up in Irish rebels' fight for freedom from British oppression in the early 20th century. Abandoning his studies, Murphy's character joins his brother in the battle that leads to a treaty, but the siblings later finding themselves on opposite sides of the Irish civil war that followed. The film by British director Ken Loach won the top prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. DVD, $19.95.
"Stranger Than Paradise," & "Night on Earth"
Jim Jarmusch's acclaimed 1984 film "Stranger Than Paradise" gets fresh DVD treatment in a two-disc set, while his 1991 tale "Night on Earth" makes its DVD debut in a single-disc release. "Stranger Than Paradise" follows the meandering relationship and road-trip ramble of two buddies and a visiting cousin. DVD extras include Jarmusch's 1980 feature debut, "Permanent Vacation," along with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and crew. "Night on Earth" features Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, Roberto Benigni, Rosie Perez and Armin Mueller-Stahl in a collection of short comic dramas that take place during five cab rides happening at the same time around the globe.
