Grateful Dogs to host Responsible Ownership Day at Nugget Mall
JUNEAU - Grateful Dogs of Juneau will host Juneau Responsible Ownership Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Nugget Mall.
Grateful Dogs and the American Kennel Club will provide educational materials on how to be a responsible dog owner. The Capital Kennel Club will present demonstrations of canine agility and obedience sports.
Other topics will include: how to prepare for a visit to the veterinarian; how a child or adult should approach a strange dog; how to trim a dog's nails; how to use a halti collar; basic canine first aid and CPR; skijoring (think dog sledding without the sled); and more.

Rendezvous, Hooligan to host first 'Guitar Hero 2' tournament
JUNEAU - The Rendezvous and Hooligan will host Juneau's first-ever "Guitar Hero 2" championships at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the downtown bar.
Men and women are invited to register for the competition, as long as they're 21 or over.
The tournament will be set up in a single-elimination bracket, with all songs played at hard or expert level on the PlayStation 2. The seeding round begins at 9 p.m.
The action will unfold on the Rendezvous' retractable video screen, above the stage in the back of the bar.
Prizes will be awarded for overall champion, as well as best rock star costume and best guitar moves. Those prizes will be announced at a later date.

Little Theatre seeks actors, directors for '24-Hour Miracle'
JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas Little Theatre is looking for actors and directors for the second annual "24 Hour Miracle" to be held Sept. 28-29 at the Canvas at 223 Seward St.
This year's writers are Sarah Brooks, writer of the one-woman play "Translation"; Geoff Kirsch, staff writer for Comedy Central's "Indecision 2008" Web site; Mike Levine and Glenn Merrill of Morally Improv-erished; and Korry Keeker, the arts reporter for the Juneau Empire, and Erin Sanders, acclaimed Chicago librarian.
The writers will be given a theme at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the KTOO lobby. They will have 12 hours to write a play, before handing it off to the directors and casts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.
The curtain rises at 8 p.m. Saturday, followed by a cast party.
The theater is looking for people with all levels of skill and experience. Last year's event featured a first-time director, a first-time playwright and several people who hadn't acted in years. There's room for actors, directors and technicians.
