Hooligan turns up the heat on another challenge

By KORRY KEEKER
JUNEAU EMPIRE

As one overcast summer day follows another, and October's squall sneaks precariously closer, we stare into the center of the fire and we brood.

O' Helios! Greek god of sun! Brazen chariot driver of the skies! Why have you forsaken us? Is our aerial interstate not paved enough for your solar steeds?

Alas. Another soggy Southeast Alaska summer brings an all-too familiar refrain. We must build our own light. We must find it within.

And whenever possible, we must express it in flaming-drink form.

Who can deny the majesty, the sense of wonder, that a fiery beverage brings to an evening's proceedings?

A flaming drink can be as complex as a "Bananas Foster":

• Slice a banana and put all slices except one into a blender. Add 1 ounce cream, 1 scoop vanilla ice cream, 1 ounce banana liqueur, ½ ounce banana rum, ½ ounce butterscotch Schnapps and ¾ ounce dark rum.

• Blend until creamy and pour into a wide-mouthed glass. Float ½ ounce of dark rum on top and add final slice of banana for garnish. Light rum on fire.

Or it can be as simple as a "Flaming Dr. Pepper":

• Fill a mug three-quarters full with beer. Pour one ounce of amaretto into a shot glass and layer one ounce of 151-proof rum on top.

• Light the shot and drop it into the beer.

We hereby present Cocktail Challenge II, a call to create a Juneau-specific flaming drink. Let's call it the "Natural Gas Pipeline."

• The particulars:

The Cocktail Challenge II deadline is Friday, Aug. 31, for your "Natural Gas Pipeline" recipes, and the best ideas will be printed in an upcoming issue of Hooligan.

Recipes will be judged by the Hooligan Flaming Drink Round Table on presentation, originality, flavor, potency, luminescence and repeatability - that is, whether one would want to consume three or four of the cocktails at a single sitting.

Deliver a copy of your recipe entry to the Empire's front desk between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, mail to Cocktail Challenge II, c/o Korry Keeker, Juneau Empire, 3100 Channel Drive, Juneau, AK 99801, or send an e-mail to korry.keeker@juneauempire.com.

Include ingredients, directions, your name, address, telephone number, e-mail and, preferably, a photo of your creation.
