Wanted: 16 Pel'Meni connoisseurs
By KORRY KEEKER
JUNEAU EMPIRE
In the industrial river town of Ekaterinburg, on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains, there's a professional soccer team named after a dumpling:
The Urals Pelmeni.
Such is the importance of the dish we call Pel'Meni to the proud people of central Russia.
Here in Juneau, of course, Pel'Meni is as much a part of downtown as a drunk girl in a bad halter top singing "Picture" during karaoke night.
Who among us hasn't forked over $5 for a dish of hot spicy meat noodles, then scarfed it down like a hungry orphan?
That's why the Hooligan staff wants to know who's the best.

Who among us can walk on stage, under hot lights in a bar in front of a packed crowd, and eat the most Pel'Meni in a series of short, timed rounds?
We're looking for 16 entrants (men or women, 21 and older) for the first-ever Competitive Pel'Meni Eating Championship. The showdown will be held late on the evening of Friday, Sept. 7, at Marlintini's Lounge in the Mendenhall Valley.
The top three will win prizes, but only the champion will win the glory.
To enter, send us a 100-word ode on your love of Pel'Meni, along with your name, address, telephone number, e-mail, height and weight. Entries are due Aug. 28.
You can deliver your entry to the Empire's front desk between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, mail to Pel'Meni Eating Contest, c/o Korry Keeker, Juneau Empire, 3100 Channel Drive, Juneau, AK 99801, or e-mail Korry.
Of course, the public is welcome to the spectacle on the night of Sept. 7. A portion of the night's proceeds will go to charity.
Korry Keeker can be reached at 523-2268 or korry.keeker@juneauempire.com
