Juneau Explorers Weekhalf-day camp starts Aug. 6

JUNEAU - Spaces are still available for Juneau Explorers Week, Aug. 6-10 at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

The half-day camp combines outdoor and indoor adventures: hiking historic trails, nature walks, touring public art, panning for gold, and related arts and craft projects. It costs $25 per day or $125 for the week.

Hayes named finalistfor PEN literary award

JUNEAU - Juneau author Ernestine Hayes, writer of the memoir "Blonde Indian," has been named a finalist in the 2007 PEN Center USA Literary Award competition.

PEN, a literary and human rights organization, has sponsored the award since 1982. This year, there were 500 submissions in 10 categories.

Convention and Visitor's Bureau announces photo contest

JUNEAU - The Juneau Convention and Visitor's Bureau is holding the "Hit Us With Your Best Shot Photo Contest 2007" to encourage photographers to capture the scenic beauty, attractions and features that are special to Juneau and its surroundings.

Photographs taken between July 2005 and Oct. 2007 are eligible. The deadline is Oct. 31

Cash prizes for first, second, and third place will be awarded in each of four categories: arts & culture, outdoor recreation, wildlife, and landscapes.

Canvas prepares for August arts and crafts courses

JUNEAU - The Canvas Community Art Studio has announced its upcoming schedule of classes in August and September.

The choices are:

• Wire Vessels with Jenna O'Fontanella, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2. Combine new and recycled materials. $20 plus $5 for materials.

• African Beading with Waitiri Boylen, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 4 and 11. $25 for one class, $45 for both, $15 materials fee.

• Drawing in Nature with Kathy Hocker, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9. $20, plus $5 materials.

• Basics of Relief Printmaking with Sarah Conarro, 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16. $30, $10 materials fee.

• Intro to Embossing with Sarah Conarro, 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. $10, plus $5 materials fee.
