I now pronounce newest Sandler flick satisfactory

Getting hitched: Kevin James, left, and Adam Sandler star in the buddy film "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry"
Adam Sandler movies can almost always be counted on for a solid 90 minutes of entertainment as long as you are willing to follow one rule:

Don't expect the movie to be something it's not.

Excluding the rather un-Sandler films "Reign Over Me," "Punch Drunk Love" and "Spanglish," the movies that made Sandler a mega-millionaire are the goofy, gross comedies such as "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore."

Sandler vehicles always feature a dorky, womanizing, crude hero that is forced to reform his ways to accomplish a noble feat. The third act usually culminates in a courtroom, with Sandler getting a girl that is way too good looking for the egg-headed actor.

Thus, "Chuck and Larry" fits the bill.

There are some minor tweaks to the formula: Kevin James makes it a buddy picture, and Sandler is admittedly a little more mature than he was in "Billy Madison." Still, the pieces are all in place. Sandler's Chuck is single and shallow, but he has to help his best friend Larry (James) secure a future for his kids (noble feat). This involves the two pretending they are a gay couple so Larry can get benifits.

"Chuck and Larry" has three things going for it that help make this a successful Happy Madison effort:

1. The script. Most comedies either work or fall flat because of the script. This is a good one, with oodles of funny characters beyond the two stars. Larry's flamboyant son, whom Larry is continuously trying to get interested in baseball, is great. Biel's gay brother is hilarious. Chuck and Larry's co-workers are all funny, especially Ving Rhames who plays a firefighter who is in the closet about his sexuality.

2. The cameos. I should have immediately written them all down because I'm sure I'll forget one or two, but here are some of the highlights: It's impossible not to laugh at Rob Schneider (a Sandler buddy and movie staple) as a pseudo-Japanese-Canadian minister. Dan Patrick plays a cop who doesn't speak "gayonese." David Spade, in a role that really suits him, is a very ugly cross-dresser.

3. Chuck and Larry! Let's face it, the movie wouldn't work if there weren't solid comedic chemistry between Sandler and James. Rest easy, because they've got it. The two actors work well enough together that it wouldn't be surprising at all to see the two men in real life yucking it up together at a local bar.

The ending is a bit contrived but this is to be expected and, because we're following the golden rule of Sandler comedies, it's OK.

My complaints with "Chuck and Larry" lie elsewhere. Specifically, on the attractive shoulders of Biel (it's not her fault, but her character doesn't offer much), the annoying Steve Buscemi and the seemingly unnecessary Dan Aykroyd. Minor complaints.

Largely, "Chuck and Larry" is impossible not to enjoy and even shows a slight evolutionary step of maturity in Sandler's comedy formula. I might even go see it again.
