Gadget tidbits

KEF speakers

KEF is one of the few stalwart British speaker manufacturers that successfully evolved from its purist audiophile roots to become a more mainstream brand.

Editors' rating: 8.3, excellent.

The good: Sleek aluminum satellite speakers use unique driver technology to produce incredible clarity; three drivers per speaker; compact, donut-shaped, dual 10-inch, 250-watt powered subwoofer; table and wall mounts included; floor stands are available.

The bad: Expensive; can't rock out or deliver home theater fury on the same level as a full-size speaker system.

The bottom line: KEF's KHT-5005.2 is one of the few surround speaker packages to coax audiophile sound from lifestyle-friendly speakers and a subwoofer.

Needs more work: The HTC Touch is innovative but its touch-screen interface can be difficult to use in day-to-day situations.
HTC Touch

The HTC Touch makes its mark by offering TouchFLO, a brand-new user interface that allows you to operate the smart phone just by swiping your finger on the device's touch screen.

Editors' rating: 6.3, good.

The good: The compact HTC Touch features an advanced touch screen that lets you operate the smart phone with your fingertips. The Windows Mobile 6 smart phone also has an updated interface, integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and a 2-megapixel camera.

The bad: The Touch's tiny onscreen keyboard makes it a pain to enter any text, and the TouchFLO feature doesn't work in landscape mode. The SIM card and microSD slots are hard to access. Also, speakerphone quality was poor, and the device can be sluggish at times.

The bottom line: The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. And despite being impressed by the beautiful hardware, the Windows Mobile smart phone lags in performance and needs a bit more tweaking before we're ready to snatch one up.
