July 18 deadline set for summer JUMP festival

JUNEAU - The submission deadline for this summer's semiannual Juneau Underground Motion Picture (JUMP) festival has been extended to July 18.

Films will be screened Thursday through Saturday, July 26-28, at the Back Room at the Silverbow Inn. Ticket information will be announced when known.

Additionally, the JUMP society has pushed the deadline to July 31 for 30-second short film public service announcements about recycling.

The Friends of Recycling, Juneau Waste Management and JUMP is sponsoring the contest. Winners receive $300.

Brown, Waterman to visit library on July 14

JUNEAU - KTOO radio personality Jeff Brown will put on a magic show at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at the downtown Juneau Public Library as part of the Summer Reading Program for Kids.

That same night, Johnathan Waterman, author of "Where the Mountains Are Nameless," will appear at 7 p.m. at the Douglas Library to talk about trekking, rafting and kayaking in the Arctic Refuge.

JAHC names Mayor's Awards for the Arts winners

JUNEAU - The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council has selected the recipients for the First Annual Mayor's Awards for the Arts.

The awards will be presented during a special fundraising luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, on the Island Princess.

Luncheon tickets are $25, and available through the JAHC offices or by calling 586-ARTS. Tickets must be purchased by July 31 to complete the necessary clearances.

The winners:

Volunteer/Patron of the Arts - Susan Fitzgerald, longtime volunteer for Juneau Jazz & Classics, arts supporter and leader in public radio arts support and advocacy.

Business Leadership in the Arts - Annie Geselle, director of the Canvas Community Art Studio & Gallery.

Artist - Heather Haugland and Antonio Diaz, for their contributions to the dance community.

Innovative Application of the Arts - Albert Aspen, who developed "Our Auntie's House", an arts and crafts program started as part of a wellness program through Tlingit & Haida Central Council.

Arts in Education - Lorrie Heagy, for her dedication, vision, and work to develop art programs in the schools.
