Audition spaces open in STAR for Shakespeare and musical JUNEAU - Audition spots are open for Perseverance Theatre's five-week Summer Theatre Arts Rendezvous for students serious about theater.

In the Junior Program, students ages 10-13 will perform Shakespeare's "Merry Wives of Windsor" and a Haida play featuring puppets and masks.

The High School Conservatory, ages 14-18, will perform the musical "Children of Eden" from the creator of "Godspell" and "Pippin."

Symphony's 'Summer Spectacular' set for June 9

JUNEAU - The Juneau Symphony will conclude its 2006-2007 season with its "Summer Spectacular" pops concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Juneau-Douglas High School auditorium.

Jack Hodges, a trombonist with the symphony for almost 40 years and a recently retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pilot, will be featured with a solo in Guilmant's "Morceau Symphonique."

Advance tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for students and seniors and are available at Hearthside Books or online at www.juneausymphony.org. At the door, tickets are $22 for general admission, $17 for students and seniors.

Pioneer Home gets ready for Senior Prom on June 8

JUNEAU - The Thunder Mountain Big Band will play the Juneau Pioneer Home's annual Senior Prom from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 8.

The event is open to the public.

Young conquers Youth Concerto Competition

JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School junior Stephen Young won top honors May 30 at the Juneau Symphony's 2007 Youth Concerto Competition.

Young, a student of Ken Guiher, played R. Vaughan Williams' "Concerto for Bass Tuba" and has been invited to perform his piece next summer with the Juneau Symphony.

The Juneau Symphony also awarded an honorable mention to 16-year-old Ross Venneberg for his "Concerto for Coloratura Soprano" by R. Gliere. Venneberg will also play with the symphony next summer.

In the junior division, 13-year-old Colin Zheng won top performance for "Violin Concerto in A minor" by J.B. Accolay.

Juneau Symphony conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett, concertmaster Steve Tada and principal trombonist Jack Hodges judged the competition.

The annual competition is open to all young musicians in Southeast Alaska. Applications for the 2008 competition will be available in January 2008. For more, contact the Juneau Symphony office at 586-HORN.

JAHC announces student scholarship winners

JUNEAU - The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council has announced the winners of its student scholarships:

• Chrystalina Roberts-Miller, a 15-year-old pianist, won the Jane Stewart Memorial Scholarship, awarded to best musician overall.

• Franz Felkl, violin, and Kristina Paulik, French horn, received Juneau Symphony scholarships for candidates demonstrating superior orchestral instrument musicianship.

• Jane Barribeau, vocals, and Molly Trostel, violin, received the Advanced Art Achievement Award in recognition of their accomplishments.

The following students have been awarded JAHC Fine Arts scholarships, in recognition of their outstanding artistic achievements: Isabel Bush, Grayson Carlile, Connor Chaney, Lindsay Clark, Auri Clark, Franz Felkl, Megan Hales, Denali Hyatt, Nate Johnson, David Miller, Kristina Paulick, Shane Prentice Walz, Cate Ross, Margaret Ross, Andrew Sigler, Kevin Sigler, Nicole Solanoy, Clairen Stone and Pauline Zheng.
