Poet Bly to open UAS Spring Forum on culture, environment

JUNEAU - Poet Robert Bly will headline this year's University of Alaska Southeast Spring Forum on "Sustaining Culture, Community and the Environment," March 29-31 at the UAS Egan Lecture Hall.

The public is invited, and there is no cost.

The forum brings business, community, government leaders, academics and artists together.

It begins at 9 a.m. Thursday with Bly and his talk, "Sustaining Culture Through Speaking Up, Poetry & Translation." Bly will also conclude the day's events at 7:30 p.m., with an analectic reading from his 40-year body of work.

Bly, 80, is a well-known author, activist and antiwar protester. His most recent collection of poems follows in that theme: "The Insanity of Empire: A Book of Poems Against the Iraq War."

'Number's Up!' farewell performance set for April 1

JUNEAU - The Canvas will host a farewell benefit performance of "Number's Up!" John Leo's solo clown play, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, April 1.

Leo is leaving for a six-month clown tour of Montreal, Toronto, Boulder, Colo., New York City and points in between.

Pay-as-you-can tickets will be sold on a sliding scale, from $5 to $20. The 4 p.m. show is appropriate for all ages. The 8 p.m. show is not.

The Canvas is at the corner of Seward and Third streets, underneath REACH.

City Museum to host 'Web-based Marketing' workshop on March 31

JUNEAU - Juneau painter and web guru Elise Tomlinson will discuss various aspects of "Web-based Marketing for Artists," from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 31, at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

Topics include: image optimization (using digital technology to photograph artwork), web presence (how to establish your own Web site) and miscellaneous marketing.

The workshop costs $20. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

Juneau History Grant applications now available

JUNEAU - Applications for the 2007-2008 Juneau History Grant are now available at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and on its Web site: www.juneau.org/parkrec/museum

Students, teachers, organizations and history enthusiasts are encouraged to apply for up to $1,000 to complete a project that will document, preserve or improve access to the history of the Juneau-Douglas area.

Completed applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the City Museum by 4 p.m. May 14. For more information contact the City Museum at 586-3572.
