I've got A cabin fever, and the only cure, is more art fest: The first-ever Cabin Fever Arts Fest, March 9-11, includes: "Disclosures," a collection of Anchorage artist Don Decker's latest wood sculptures. |

When Nancy DeCherney took over last fall as executive director of the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council, she spoke with Juneau mayor Bruce Botelho about some possible projects.
"He suggested that one thing that would be very useful would be to bring all the groups together for a summit to celebrate the arts and bring public attention to all of the things the arts do for the community," DeCherney said.
It has taken a while, but the suggestion has come to life in the Cabin Fever Arts Fest - a three-day series of seminars and workshops this Friday through Sunday, which just happens to coincide with an assortment of concerts, plays, art openings and opera.
Friday's opening day also coincides with programs for Juneau school kids. It includes a "Turntable Mechanics" workshop with DJs AstronoMAR and Smack, plus the first in a series of film editing workshops taught by Pat Race of Lucid Reverie and the Juneau Underground Motion Picture Society.

"The kids are off from school, which is why it works to have 'Turntable Mechanics,'" DeCherney said. "My kid really likes AstronoMAR, and I know my daughter's friends who are into video think very highly of Pat Race. I bet kids would like to learn from these guys, and I'm really delighted that they're willing to do it."
At noon Friday, Poetry Omnibus founder Kristan Hutchison will read her new poem "Words on Wheels" on the Capitol steps. Capital Transit driver Ray Tsang will provide accompaniment - on horn, brakes, doors and the other "instruments" of a city bus.
Hutchison will later present the city's buses with the placards of the new Poetry Omnibus poems.
"The bus has been written into the performance poem," Hutchison said. "There are places where the bus has a role."
Doug Smith will play an hour-long program of classical music at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in a "Restoration Recital" for the church's recently restored 1920 Steinway grand piano.

Cathy Fritz' father-in-law first obtained the piano in a legal settlement as part of an estate he was working with down south. The piano moved up to Juneau, back to the Lower 48 and eventually turned into a derelict. Once it was even coated black with house paint.
Fritz inherited the piano when her in-laws died but had no room for a grand piano. Still, she decided to pay $10,000 to have it restored. St. Paul's paid the shipping costs under the agreement that the church would house it for a minimum of five years.
"When I was looking for a piano for the church, I honed in on this one, and contacted Doug," said Alan Rogers, church parishioner. "Doug wrote back and said, 'You can't get a better piano than a 1920s Steinway.'
"It's been a real journey, and now we have a piano that looks brand new, sounds terrific and is 87 years old," he said.
